Alternatives to Netflix
Although Netflix is a popular streaming service, available for an affordable monthly subscription with many movies and TV shows, there are other alternatives to Netflix that also allow you to stream content and, in most cases, for free! Such an alternative includes the well-known Kodi app. Kodi is a media player (that is legal), but you can install add-ons onto it to access movies, TV shows, music, and more. These add-ons can be purchased and installed through the “Add-on” section in the Kodi app. There, you can purchase specific content packages that include sports games, TV shows, and live events, for example.
Using Netflix with the Firestick Remote
The Firestick remote works extremely well with the Firestick Netflix app! Fortunately, we can simply use the Up / Down / Left / Right arrows on the Fire TV remote to navigate around Netflix. The Firestick remote looks like the one in the image below (but the one in the image below has an attachment):

Here is where Netflix differs from apps like Kodi. Contrary to Netflix, users can install third-party add-ons to stream a wide range of content. In some cases, these third-party add-ons may channel content from streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, thus making such content free for the user to view, where they would otherwise have to pay to see it. With the installation of third-party add-ons on the Kodi app, you have access to movies, TV shows, music (which may also be sourced from Pandora or Spotify), and more. Note, with third-party apps comes the heightened potential of viewing pirated content.
Kodi Compared to Firestick Netflix
Although Kodi is a streaming service like Netflix, it utilizes open-source software, allowing users to install add-ons and stream content at their own will. In terms of usability Netflix has a more user-friendly interface and accessing titles is quick and simple. Downloading Kodi also requires a bit of a process, as it is not readily accessible on the Firestick homepage, nor within the search. With help installing Kodi, you can review this video tutorial. With Kodi, it is also advised to get a Virtual Private Network (VPN), so that you can stream your content with ease.
Along with Kodi comes other app alternatives such as Terranium TV. It is important to note that like Netflix, these apps are legal to use, but unlike Netflix, they can be altered by the installation of third-party add-ons to view pirated content for free. No matter if you choose to use Netflix or an alternative to Netflix, we hope this guide provided an understanding of how to navigate Netflix (and other apps) properly on your Firestick.

Using a VPN for Movie Streaming Apps
For the app alternatives to watch movies mentioned in this article, it is recommended to acquire a virtual private network (VPN). VPNs encrypt all of your internet traffic and reroute it through an intermediary server in your chosen location. Because you can alter your location with a VPN, this allows you to access geo-blocked content and download apps and add-ons otherwise restricted in your area. Your activity also becomes private and hidden from internet service providers (ISPs) looking to interfere with your streaming activities. This is the key component to keeping yourself anonymous while you watch Firestick movies.
Although VPNs are quite beneficial when you’re streaming content, especially from third-party apps, all VPNs slow down internet connection and so it is advised to get the fastest VPN possible. One of the most recommended VPNs is IPVanish. Luckily, IPVanish is available on the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick’s default app store, but do note, you will have to subscribe to IPVanish to use it.
To install IPVanish from your Amazon Firestick, go to Apps from the Fire TV menu and then go to Categories→ Utility. In the list, scroll to IPVanish and select it. Once you select the app, install it and select Open to start the app. Assuming you’ve already subscribed to IPVanish, you can enter your account information and then click Login. After you log in, select the Connect button to establish your VPN connection.
